The 17.3 inch ASUS X755JA-DS71 is a great desktop replacement laptop, perfect for everyday home use or suitable in an office where screen size and value for money are more important than portability.
Coming at a list price of just $829, the ASUS impresses through screen real estate and processing power. Equipped with a true quad core 4th generation Intel i7-4712MQ, the X755JA will handle almost everything you’ll throw at it, including heavy multitasking such as streaming video in one window, while editing an Office document in another and browsing several demanding webpages with absolutely no lag or freeze time. The Intel i7-4712MQ processor in this laptop is a true powerhouse and is still regarded as one of the best and most well received mobile CPU’s to date. This is where the ASUS shines and where most of its extraordinary value comes from. Also, the 8GB of DDR3 RAM are sufficient to handle everyday tasks and even a lot more (such as photo editing, illustrating art and lightly editing videos), but if you ever find yourself needing even more system memory to be available at your fingertips, you can double it, since it is user upgradeable and accepts dual channel memory sticks thanks to the 2 available slots.
Storage space is standard for an everyday laptop: 1TB of available space through a Hard Disk Drive with a rotational speed of 5400 rpm. This configuration will hamper the laptop’s tremendous computing power a bit, so getting an SSD upgrade is desirable and even recommended should your needs for pure computational speed and system snappiness outweigh the need for extended storage space.
We’ve also heard many people complain about the integrated video card, but we think it’s perfectly acceptable for a laptop like this (and with that price tag) to come without a dedicated video card. After all, the ASUS will likely be used by a more broad user spectrum that doesn’t actually need high performance graphics to use in newly launched games. The screen, a 17.3 inch LED Anti-glare display is decent, but not out of the ordinary. We would have liked to see a full HD resolution on the ASUS to really make it stand out. However, it has both HDMI and VGA display ports, so hooking up an external monitor, regardless of interface will be of issue.
Networking-wise, the ASUS X755JA-DS71 comes with a 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi card and has Bluetooth 4.0 incorporated. It also sports a DVD writer, which we think completes the picture of a very good all-rounder capable of replacing any desktop with ease. Replacing a desktop means that battery life is unimpressive and surely that’s the case here as well: the 6 Cell Li-Ion battery will give you about 4 hours of screen time before throwing the towel, which isn’t great, but it’s understandable considering the massive energy requirements of the processor, the physical hard drive and the 17.3″ screen. Keeping those details in mind we can safely say that the battery life is perfectly acceptable. This laptop isn’t that mobile due to its size and weight, but it’s comfortable enough to move around the house or the office.
