The relatively rugged Lenovo B50 series are designed for office and work environment tasks. Delivering speed and accessibility is a must for these workhorses, not to mention durability and competitive prices. Therefore, the Lenovo B50-80 80EW023CUS, the most expensive variation of the series will deliver those results.
It comes equipped with a 5th generation dual core Intel Core i7-5500U (launched in the first quarter of 2015) which has 4MB of cache. Also, the system memory is maxed out at 8GB RAM, meaning that you won’t be able to further upgrade it, but you more than likely won’t need to. A big minus for this series is the lack of a factory assembled Solid State Drive. Instead, the Lenovo B50 will come shipped with a 1TB Hard Disk Drive. You will get a lot of storage space out of the HDD, but not the speed guaranteed by an SSD. A bit of a downer here, but it may work out fine in the end since businesses need a lot of storage space and many haven’t switched yet to cloud hosting solutions.
The display is a brilliant Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels, 15.6 inches across with great viewing angles considering the purpose of the laptop. And with that resolution, every presentation and workspace will be influenced by the increased screen real estate. More work done, more money saved in the long run. The graphics processor is, as we’ve expected an integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500, which should be enough for the daily needs of every business, with the exception of graphic professionals, animators, R&D teams, etc.
Connectivity-wise, the laptop shines with the new 802.11ac Wi-Fi protocol, so streaming video conferences will work smoothly and without interruptions. It also has an RJ-45 Ethernet port for those places where Wi-Fi isn’t present and, very importantly, a VGA port for connecting to video projectors. The fingerprint reader will add an extra measure of optional security for this laptop and the operating system can be downgraded to Windows 7. This is a very important feature for businesses that have operated for long periods of time on certain operating systems and can’t make the change fast enough, so seamless transition is desirable. Think of how widespread Windows XP still is.
The laptop is quite heavy and will run out of power in 5 hours and a half, but has the benefit of interchangeable batteries. Therefore, this is not a travel laptop, but mobile enough to carry around the office or at home during the weekend.
