Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD Laptop Review

The Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD is a mid-range notebook designed for everyday users. It’s not as stylish as other devices, but it gets the job done at a much lower price than most of the competition, therefore offering increased value over time.

Key Features

  • Intel Core i7 / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 940MX
  • 15.6″ FHD display
  • 4 USB ports
  • 12-hours of battery life

Review

The new Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD laptop that’s promised to be as successful as the popular 53VG variant has a dual core Intel Core i7-7500U processor installed. This CPU, although not being top of the line, cream of the cream, is a perfectly adequate choice for a wide range of users, including the ones in need of higher end computing.

It has 8 gigabytes of DDR4 SDRAM installed, which should prove sufficient for most, if not all needs. It will handle large data sets, heavy multitasking and seriously demanding programs with ease. If, however, you find yourself needing more system memory, you can always upgrade it to a maximum of 32 gigabytes by using the two available RAM slots. These can be accessed with ease through a dedicated door.

As for storage space, depending on your wants and needs, the 256-gigabyte SSD may prove to be either adequate or insufficient. I don’t recommend switching to a mechanical hard disk drive, but I can suggest buying an external drive to store your extra files. The speed benefit of a solid state drive heavily outweighs the loss in storage space when compared to a hard drive, so stick to it.

The graphics department features a dedicated video card, the 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce 940MX. It’s not designed specifically for gaming, as this is a low end mobile graphics card. You’ll be able to play titles such as FIFA, Battlefield or Overwatch at medium quality settings mostly. However, with a RAM boost and with the help of the fast SSD, this laptop’s gaming prowess can be slightly improved.

As for the display, the Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD has a 15.6 inch FHD ComfyView LED-backlit panel. There’s no IPS technology available here, but color reproduction and color depth are both great thanks to Acer’s ColorBlast and ExaColor technologies.

Interface options are plentiful. The Acer has:

  • 1 x USB-C port
  • 2 x USB 3.0 ports
  • 1 x USB 2.0 port
  • 1 x HDMI
  • 1 x COMBO audio jack
  • 1 x SD card reader
  • 1 x RJ-45
  • 1 x DVD-writer

Concerning networking options, the Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD features a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection, 802.11ac MU-MIMO WLAN and built-in Bluetooth 4.1.

Portability is one of the few issues I have with this notebook. At 1.2 inches thick, it’s quite bulky. Also, the 5.3 pounds of hardware you’d have to carry around will likely seem cumbersome for most users. Especially if you’re used to lighter devices.

This shouldn’t be a problem if it’s used as an inexpensive powerhouse. The size and weight will go unnoticed when used as a desktop replacement or work station.

And so, with great surprise, we see that the 6-cell, 2800 mAh battery pack will power the Acer for up to 12 hours. It’s a conflicting number, since this isn’t built to be that much of a traveler’s choice, but still benefits from an extended battery life.

Final words

I’d say the Acer Aspire E5-575G-75MD is a perfect laptop for those who either want to replace or extend a desktop, for professionals in need of a rather inexpensive powerhouse and for gamers that can’t afford a proper gaming laptop, but want the best of both worlds: performance and increased battery life.
